August 2026 Pull List: The Comics Worth Locking In Before Cutoff

August is one of those months where the shelf and the order form tell two different stories. What is arriving in the shop right now is the tail end of summer. What is sitting on the pre-order sheet is October — horror season, licensed relaunches, and a couple of oversized art books that will sell out at the distributor level before they ever reach a shelf.

That gap is the whole reason a pull list exists. Everything below has a Final Order Cutoff between late August and early October, which means the window is open now and closes quietly, without an announcement. Universal Monsters: Bride of Frankenstein Lives #1

Kelly Thompson and Mattia De Iulis reunite after The Cull for the next chapter of the Universal Monsters line, and this is the one we are ordering deepest on. The premise does something more interesting than a straight adaptation: the Bride wakes with no memory of what she is, takes one look at the world, and is unimpressed. Thompson writes prickly, reluctant protagonists better than almost anyone working, and De Iulis paints rather than inks, which gives it a soft, storm-lit quality that suits the material. Four issues, on sale late October.

ThunderCats (2026) #1

Greg Pak taking over ThunderCats is the kind of creator-property match that makes a relaunch worth attention. Pak's best superhero work has always been about people who become monsters and have to live with it, and the hook here is exactly that: an omen from the sky unleashes something inside Lion-O and turns him into the Feral King. David Cousens, coming off Cheetara: Worldbreaker, draws. The Mark Spears main cover is the one collectors will chase.

Archie vs. The Terminator #1

Yes, really. A teenage John Connor enrolls at Riverdale High and the gang ends up in a Terminator's crosshairs. Rory McConville writes, Steven Butler and Lily Butler draw, and the cover roster — Francavilla, Robert Hack, Bjorn Barends, Bill Galvan — tells you Archie knows exactly what kind of book this is. Francavilla's Cover A is worth owning on its own merits.

The Strange Talent of Luther Strode #1 Anniversary Edition

Fifteen years since Justin Jordan, Tradd Moore and Felipe Sobreiro turned a Charles Atlas mail-order ad into one of the most gleefully violent debuts Image ever published. This double-sized reprint carries the complete first issue plus a gallery spanning the full Luther Strode saga. If you only know Moore's later, more psychedelic work, going back to where his line started is instructive.

The Last Starfighter: Beta #1

Forty years on, someone finally gave Beta his own book. The simuloid duplicate who died so Alex Rogan could live turns out not to have died at all, and the one-shot follows an organic robot with no orders left to execute trying to work out what to do with itself. Original film writer Jonathan Betuel is involved, with Benjamin Raab and Deric A. Hughes writing and David Cutler on art.

Toxic Avenger vs. The Noxious Offender #1

Matt Bors has been the steady hand on Toxie for a while, and this one sets an evil interdimensional duplicate against him at the same moment his estranged father turns up. Five issues, with a photo-montage cover shot at Troma itself. If you like your superhero satire mean rather than winking, this is the book.

The Department of Truth #40

Deep into the endgame now. This issue turns on a woman whose life has been rewritten by rumors of files she cannot verify — Cole Turner wants to help, Hunter Hill has other plans. The backup continues Ben Templesmith's take on Martin Barker's origin, quietly some of the best-looking work in the book.

That Texas Blood: Hell Comes to Allison Ranch #2

Chris Condon and Jacob Phillips picking up Joe Bob Coates again is reason enough. Issue two pushes further into the mess at the ranch while Travis Terrill works through his own wreckage. Phillips colors like nobody else in crime comics right now — that dusty, bruised palette does half the storytelling. It is also a good gateway into the rest of our indie and licensed comics recommendations.

Two hardcovers worth the shelf space

Beta Ray Bill by Daniel Warren Johnson Artist's Edition reproduces Johnson's entire miniseries at original art size, scanned in color so the blue pencil, ink gradients and corrections all survive. Walter Simonson writes the introduction, which is the only correct choice. Artist's Editions at this print run do not get reprinted. The DC Art of Michael Turner is the third in Clover Press's oversized DC Art of… series, collecting Turner's Superman/Batman pages alongside cover work on Identity Crisis, Countdown, Teen Titans and more, with an introduction by Geoff Johns. A 9×12 hardcover, and a reminder of how completely Turner defined the look of mid-2000s DC. Pairs well with our beginner's guide to reading Batman if the covers send you looking for the stories behind them.

Variants worth a second look

A few covers this cycle are striking rather than just numerous. Firefly #2 has an unusually deep foil program, including a 1:25 JG Jones icon foil. Space Ghost vs. The Herculoids #2 offers a 1:25 Drew Moss virgin that strips the trade dress off a very clean piece of design work.

What does FOC mean on a comic pre-order?

FOC stands for Final Order Cutoff. It is the last date we can adjust our order with the distributor before it locks. After that date, we can only sell what we already committed to, which is why reserving before FOC is the reliable way to guarantee a copy of anything with a small print run.

Do I save money by pre-ordering instead of buying off the shelf?

Yes. Pre-ordered standard covers are 20% off automatically in your cart, and pre-ordered incentive and ratio covers are 10% off. The discount applies at checkout — there is no code to remember.

What happens if I miss the FOC date on a book I wanted?

You are not out of luck, but you are relying on our shelf overage rather than a reserved copy. Popular #1s and low-ratio incentives sell through most often. It is also worth checking our backstock, which is 35% off, since older issues of a series frequently turn up there.

Are incentive and virgin variants a good investment?

We would rather you buy a cover because you want to look at it. Ratio variants are scarcer by design and some hold value well, but the market moves unpredictably and we do not recommend treating comics as a savings account. Buy the art you like.

How far ahead are these books actually shipping?

Most of the single issues above have FOC dates in September and early October with on-sale dates in late October, so you are locking in roughly two months ahead. The hardcovers run longer — the Michael Turner book arrives in November, the Artist's Edition in early 2027.
