What Is a Variant Cover?

A variant cover is an alternate cover printed for the same comic issue. The story inside is identical — only the artwork on the front changes. Publishers use variants to give retailers something special to sell, to showcase guest artists, and to drive early orders.

A single issue of a popular book like Absolute Batman might ship with a dozen or more different covers. Cover A is the standard one. Everything after that is a variant of some kind.

Ratio & Incentive Variants: What 1:10, 1:25 and 1:50 Actually Mean

This is the number that confuses everyone, and the answer is simpler than it looks.

The ratio describes what a retailer had to order to earn one copy. It is not a print run number and it is not a rarity guarantee.

• 1:10 incentive — the shop had to order 10 copies of the standard cover to qualify for one copy of this cover.
• 1:25 incentive — 25 standard copies ordered to earn one.
• 1:50 incentive — 50 standard copies ordered to earn one.
• 1:100, 1:200, 1:500 — the deep end. These are genuinely scarce and priced accordingly.

You will also see these written as INCV (incentive) or RI (retailer incentive) in a listing title. They mean the same thing.

The practical takeaway: the higher the ratio, the fewer copies exist in the wild, and the more a shop had to commit financially to get one. That is why a 1:50 sits at a very different price point than a Cover B.

The Other Variant Types Worth Knowing

Card Stock Variants

Printed on heavier, matte cardstock rather than standard glossy paper. They feel noticeably more premium and usually carry a small price bump — typically a dollar or so over the standard cover. Widely available and a great entry point if you like nicer covers but do not want to chase ratios.

Virgin Variants

A virgin cover strips away all the trade dress — no logo, no title, no barcode, no price box. Just the artwork, edge to edge. Collectors love them because they read like a poster. Virgin covers are almost always sold as higher ratio incentives.

Foil Variants

Metallic foil stamping over the artwork. Gorgeous under light, and a favourite for display copies. Foils have exploded in popularity over the last few years and often carry strong aftermarket demand.

Blank Sketch Covers

A completely blank white cover, made to be drawn on. Fans take these to conventions and commission artists to sketch directly onto the book. A remarked sketch cover is a genuine one-of-one.

Store Exclusive & Signed Covers

Commissioned by an individual retailer, usually in a limited quantity, and often available nowhere else. Signed editions add a creator autograph, sometimes with a certificate of authenticity. These are the covers that make a shop's shelf look different from everyone else's.

Which Variants Are Actually Worth Buying?

Honest answer: the ones you want to look at. Speculation is a rough game and most variants do not appreciate. But there are patterns worth knowing.

Variants that tend to hold value:

• First appearances of a character on a low print-run cover
• Issue #1s of a series that goes on to get a film or TV adaptation
• High ratio incentives (1:50 and above) by in-demand artists
• Virgin and foil treatments of genuinely iconic artwork
• Store exclusives with a stated, low print run

Variants that usually do not:

• Low ratio incentives on books with enormous print runs
• Mid-run issues of an ongoing series with no story significance
• Anything bought purely because someone online called it "hot"

The collectors who stay happiest in this hobby are the ones buying covers they genuinely love. Value is a bonus, not a plan.

How to Get Variants Before They Sell Out
